USA: Australian story makes front page news

It isn't often that I hear much about Australia in the US papers, but on Sunday a story about Australia made the front page of the Seattle Times:

I didn't get to vote in this year's election because I'm OS. It was weird hardly hearing anything about the election here. No doubt back home there was plenty of media coverage, debates etc. What a massive swing from 4 years earlier.

It was glorious; and a very enjoyable election night. IMHO, of course.

Did you hear about his seat of Bennelong?

The article mentioned that he might lose his seat to a rookie politician and former TV anchorwoman. Nice.

It is still a bit scary how fickle the general Aussie population is. I guess 4 years ago there just wasn't a viable alternative. Kim Beasley could have swung some serious public support with some actual policies back then.

There were some interesting aspects to this election and its lead-up. To me, four terms of government is really too long; as recent Australian history (if not elsewhere) has shown a false sense of unlimited power emerging during the latter years. Also, whilst the formal campaign starts only about six weeks before the election, this time billions of $ were being spread across select projects (mainly in marginal seats) several months before the election was announced. Lastly, the Federal Govt 'got tough' and crossed traditional Federal /State administrative boundaries to take on some issues which have been in the limelight for the 11 years but only solvable in the last few months of office !! However, I do believe that Mr Howard was a good Prime Minister for our country for the most part but that he lost his way at various times and towards the end possibly through party arrogance.

Australians can still vote in Australian elections, even if they are o/s. You can postal vote, or you can vote at the Australian Embassy if you happen to have one nearby. :)

Good point about voting OS. G & I removed ourselves from the electoral roll for now.

It will be very interesting to be observers of the US elections next year. Even the local elections here are crazy, with heaps of signs and advertising for all the candidates.
